Courting Quiet Luxury

Last week 3.1 Phillip Lim held an event at his SoHo store celebrating artists of Asian descent, an event that was part of an in-store exhibit of art by 12 different creatives. Lim’s business of partner of 20 years, Wen Zhou, who has one of those only-in-America, amazing origin stories, spoke on a panel titled “Crafting Selfhood: Bridging Art and Identity Across Generations,” along with artists Lena Imamura and Helena Dong.

Zhou emphasized that the brand has run independently for 20 years, though they are now mulling the possibility of outside investment. During the question and answer period, I asked Zhou whether the quiet luxury trend has benefited the brand. She put aside the question and noted instead that a brand being perceived as quiet luxury doesn’t exist without a very big marketing budget.
