Nike Takes Aim At Illicit Empire While Stock Declines Draw Hot Takes

The bell has finally tolled for Shoe Surgeon, a custom sneaker business founded by Dominic Ciambrone in 2013. Nike today filed a trademark infringement lawsuit against the Los Angeles-based company in the Southern District of New York, accusing the company of running an “illicit Nike empire,” according to reporting on X by New York-based attorney Zakari “Zak” Kurtz, the founder of Sneaker & Streetwear Legal Services.
The news is meaningful because Nike has been on a tear over the past few years suing multiple business and brands for copyright infringement, and all the while people have wondered, why not Shoe Surgeon, a brand known not just for customizing the occasional one-off pair of shoes, but also creating mass volumes of copied shoes and providing classes at its Surgeon Academy teaching others how to do the same.
