Nike was forced to issue a statement in response to Complex reporter Brendan Dunne’s (who if you recall reported on Nike’s leaked SNKRS meeting a few weeks back) tweet noting a store had received a notice from Nike cancelling all orders through summer 2022.
The runaway train took off when the tweet was picked up by Newsweek with a headline reading “Nike Cancels Store's Orders Until Summer '22,” and was subsequently covered by finance pub Seeking Alpha.
While the tweet included plenty of pushback, it caused enough panic to cause Academy Sports, Hibbet Sports and Foot Locker’s stock to drop. It should be noted, the pullback came despite Dick’s Sporting Goods and Foot Locker’s very recent positive earnings reports, which included guidance raises for both.
Dismissing the hubbub at the end of the day on Wednesday, Nike’s sent a statement to Footwear News reading as follows:
