British Vogue’s February cover celebrating fashion’s current love affair with African models has created quite the stir. While fashion insider types have praised editor-in-chief Edward Enninful’s direction and the artistry of the issue to the high heavens, the photographs have fallen flat with a lot of Vogue readers, many of whom aren’t accustomed to seeing cutting edge photography on the magazine’s cover.
While Rafael Pavarotti is known for blowing out skin tones in his images, some were put off by what they viewed as “reverse bleaching.” There were also people who loved the cover, but wished the models wore natural hair styles. One cogent point raised in our Instagram feed, is the ongoing trend in fashion of erasing Black American models.
Given the departure from more typical Vogue cover lighting, in my opinion it would have been helpful had Enninful weighed in on creative direction for the issue, but it seems he has purposefully chosen no…
